Episode 28: Do It Again

New Episodes

Re-recordings of songs that do not suck or offend. In light of the Scorpions new album called ‘Comeblack’ which is half covers and half re-recorded hits, it got me thinking whether or not there were other examples of this which I actually liked. I was very surprised to find out that there are exceptions to my ‘all re-recordings suck and are unnecessary’ rule, who knew? So join me as I focus on a musical topic which is damn near impossible to defend and check out bands and singers who have gone into the studio with the sheer intention of rewriting history and yet they didn’t tarnish it either.

Episode 24: The Ten Of Eleven

New Episodes

My favorite albums of 2011. This is the Rock Strikes Ten debut of the ‘C’ in CNJRadio. The records I chose for this show is the list as of air time on New Year’s Day and I had a list with about 15 more records that I enjoyed quite a lot this year but I ultimately decided on playing these particular albums. I hope you are not bummed that I didn’t rank any of them except for the top two. Perhaps a familiar voice will make things up to you……

p.s. I definitely recommend the laundry list of records I spout off at the end of the show as well

Episode 23: Eleven’s Fallen

New Episodes

Paying tribute to the musicians, singers and songwriters who we lost this year. This week it is ten songs representing these people who passed on and spotlighting the music they created. I want to mention here that there were a few more notable deaths this year and I didn’t mention them on the show.

Don Kirshner – brought rock and roll television to an entire generation of 70’s kids
Wurzel (Motorhead) note: I played a song that Wurzel performed on during the recent metal show
Andrew Gold note: I felt really bad leaving him off the show
Steve Jobs – No podcasts without this guy, THANK YOU STEVE!
“Macho Man” Randy Savage – easily the hardest death for me this year, miss ya champ!

Episode 20: Death By Stone

New Episodes

aka Guitarists that do no make me Jann. Yes corporate magazines still suck and there is no greater proof than two things, this week’s show art and Rolling Stone magazine with their current list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of ALL TIME”. I did so much raving and ranting on the show that I completely forgot to mention that they bumped Glen Buxton off their list this time around after cracking the bottom 10 last time. I talk enough on this episode so cutting to the chase this is a short list of players that you will not find on the Rolling Stone BS list. If you somehow subscribe to Rolling Stone then by all means PLEASE cancel it and use what you have remaining as an emergency wipe.

Episode 19: MuppeTENtional

New Episodes

Time to eat your drums…Inspired by the latest Muppets movie and as a theme request from listener and friend of CNJRadio Mr. Adam Arthur. My first musical inspiration in this world was The Muppets led by Jim Henson, Frank Oz and company. They still to this day hold a special place in my heart so here is my tribute to them. This will be a rare time on the show where it isn’t incredibly ‘ROCK’ and I hope you will indulge me here when I do this on occasion. I will remind you that you do have a voice on this show so let me know how you feel. Special thanks to Adam once again for sending me all of the Muppet clips, they were awesome.

Episodes 16-18: Gil-Logan’s Island [Bang Your Head] (Part 1)

New Episodes

The long awaited heavy metal focus episode. Just like the genre itself, we do it big here and to an excessive and decadent degree because I am joined by one of my best friends of all time, Logan. What started out as a regular episode ended up being a 3 hour plus roundtable and oh yeah we still manage to play ten songs, NO MORE!……NO LESS! I know that a section of you that listen are not big heavy metal fans but this show IS for you. Obviously if you are a fan, you should enjoy this episode immensely but this is what I like to call the handshake into heavy metal (hornshake?) and this is what I believe to be the Top 10 icons of heavy metal. Myself and Logan talk in length about what these bands mean to heavy metal and to us as people. Logan even manages to brings in a few alternate selections for those of you that are looking to take some of the more extreme next steps. I hope you enjoy this episode at even a fraction of how much I enjoyed making this one. Let me know what you think about me doing this show with the occasional special guest if you have an opinion. Afterwards, use the link directly below this and tell Logan whether or not you want him to do a ‘Birth, School, Metal, Death’ show for all of you on a regular basis. *Updated* Ok, so I get this email and site comment from friend and listener Steven (thanks Steven!) that he can’t hear the songs on Episode 16. Naturally, this concerned me so I immediately checked the podcast posting in my library and lo and behold NO SONGS! After panic mode set in I decided to just go back and retrieve the whole show, break it up into 2 parts and repost it as such. So there you go, because the technical gods just weren’t metal enough to handle a 3 hour and 20 minute show, and because I have to keep each file consistent in naming them alright blah blah blah long story long. Just enjoy the shows and know that I am not trying to pad my number of episodes, this is just the only way I could do it. Thanks for understanding and for listening and know that I appreciate you all. ENJOY THE SHOWS!

Episode 12: Perfect Strangers

New Episodes

In (dis)honor of the recent collaboration of Lou Reed and Metallica, I decided to play my favorite weird and random duets that (much like the aforementioned LouTallica) look horrible on paper but (much like the aforementioned LouTallica) actually don’t stink up the joint. I can’t recommend an album LESS than ‘Lulu’. It is offensive to all of the senses that human beings have and if you want to listen to a metal band that won’t let you down then look no further to the remaining ‘Big 4’ lineup of Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth. Lou Reed? yes I like ‘Transformer’ & ‘Berlin’ & ‘Rock & Roll’ but bottom line? you haven’t made anything great in my lifetime sir….end of story. Okay! I got that off my chest so now enjoy the show chock full of even weirder duets that will (hopefully) put a smile on your face enough to where you are compelled to buy.

Episode 7: Frightful Monikers

New Episodes

It is one of my favorite times of the whole year. Yes, Halloween week is upon us and it is especially sweet for me being the first year of Rock Strikes Ten and I get to play some of my all time favorite spooky song fare here for you all to enjoy. In building up through the week to the actual scary part, we get things rolling here with bands that chose to go the scary route in picking a name for themselves or for their band. I learned for myself that there were two artists on this show that I have been deprived of for far too long. Which ones were they you ask? Well you will just have to click in all the right places to find out.

Episode 5: We’ll Do It Live!

New Episodes

Hello again to all of you! I’m (almost) live this week and so is the music meaning these are some of my favorite live musical performances of all time. Much like last week’s look at the modern bands, I can guarantee you for sure that this will be the first of many episodes of this nature. I had a lot of fun putting this list together and my apologies if I didn’t represent your favorite album this time around. Trust me, I didn’t get to all of my faves either.

If you are reading this entry then chances are your name is on the show this week. I appreciate every single one of you that take the time to listen to this show every week much less take the time to write in. The rock is strong with ALL of you and this one’s for you.

Episode 4: Modern Love

New Episodes

Hello to everybody out there and it’s time yet again for another episode of Rock Strikes Ten. This show is the first volume of a theme I will be revisiting from time to time as the show goes on. Tonight I am focusing on some the newer bands that I like out there for one to give credit where credit is due and two to prove that I don’t just limit myself to a certain era of music. I will never claim to ‘listen to everything’ which always makes me cringe when people say that to prove their musical range. Long story short, be honest about what you listen to and only be true to yourself.

I promise this site will get a lot more exciting and aesthetically pleasing. I plan on putting buy links up to everything that I play on each episode. I will also start listing off songs that I cut off of each episode just because. Perhaps I will post up lists of upcoming albums and other music news in general. Hey I’m still new to this solo show stuff so let’s all bask in the exciting and new as well as the unknown.

Okay okay let me just stop this commentary so you can go listen to the latest episode, ENJOY!

Once you have listened to the episode, feel free to email joey@cnjradio.com and tell me who your favorite new bands or singers are out there. Perhaps I missed somebody you may think I may not be aware of. I promise not to be insulted by your insinuations because there’s so much stuff out there I am sure I miss a lot of things. As always, I would love to know what your favorite or least favorite songs were from each episode. In addition you can request a theme for a future episode or just send good ol’ hate mail.

Records I’m listening to right now

Michael Monroe – Sensory Overdrive

Twisted Sister – Live at the Marquee Club

Dee Snider – Van Helsing’s Cure

John Carpenter – Halloween Soundtrack (Anniversary Edition)

Beach Boys – Smile Sessions (Bootleg Box Set)

Anthrax – Worship Music (still)

Alice Cooper – Welcome 2 My Nightmare (still)

Ghost – Opus Eponymous (yes they were not on this episode but I figured between Halloween and a year end best of episode both coming up that they will make a minimum of 2 appearances on the show oh so very soon)

5 will be ALL LIVE so get those requests in and I will resist the temptation to play something from Kiss Alive or Cheap Trick At Budokan, STAY TUNED!….
